Summer and Autumn
Half an hour, that’s how much time it takes to reach our home from school,
But that day I took 25 minutes more; I stopped with my friends for some ice cream, can you blame me it was a Winter afternoon and you wouldn't let me any.
Anyway, I crossed the corner to my block, and a huge tree came into my sight, a tree with a wooden plank swing, I realized I reached home. But soon I realized there was a hustle near my house and my heart sank when I saw the Ambulance.
I ran from the front porch into my house to the living room and I froze, my legs wobbled without any hint of strength and I crashed into the floor. My soul broke, broke into five thousand pieces, for every day that I lived.
They laid you in a body bag with the tag ‘Summer’, and my blank broken mind had its first thought, ”How are they gonna pick her up, there’s no handle, there’s nothing, they are gonna drop her”;
And they just picked you up and tossed it in the van.
I screamed, “Hey, that’s my mom”, but no one heard me, perhaps the only one who would have was in that bag,
They took you away and I just stood there with Dad’s hand on my shoulder, he was the first one to find you.
We came back inside the empty house bustling with people, it was so quiet with the blood from you slit your wrist all over the floor and the sofa on which you laid ‘till the end.
For the next three days, I sat on the stairs waiting for you to come back, come back, and say, “I am alright now, it was just a small injury, they fixed me and now it’s all good. Come in, I’ll fix you some snacks”,
But you never came back, you were never coming back and I just sat there.
Dad went back home and brought his stuff, said he was gonna live with me;
And in that lonely dreadful house were just me and a stranger called ‘Father’.
And I just had two thoughts in my mind, “‘What if’ and ‘Was I not enough’”, was I mom, I never got to know WHY?
Well, it’s spring now, and your granddaughter is riding the swing that you once loved and enjoyed, we named her Autumn cause that's what you loved, right.
